Christmas blizzard to bring major holiday travel impacts

AMS certified meteorologist Jonathan Kegges breaks down the impact of an impactful snowstorms crossing the county during Christmas week.

Chapters:

The makings of a pre-Christmas blizzard are getting underway in the Northern Plains. As the system dives through the Plains during the week, heavy snow and blizzard conditions will be possible.
In addition to the snow, wind gusts on the order of 40-50 mph will create whiteout conditions from the foothills of the Rockies through parts of the Mid-Atlantic.

Airport delays could be significant from Chicago through the Northeast, especially Thursday and Friday. The ripple effect felt across country could also be noteworthy.

Behind the storm, dangerously cold air blasts in, especially west of the Mississippi. Wind chill values will dip to 40-60 degrees below zero in parts of Wyoming, Montana and the Dakotas.

The dangerously cold air moves into the Deep South Thursday and Friday. The airmass had been charging up over Siberia and is now plunging east of the Canadian Rockies and entering the northern tier of the country.

Temperatures in the core of the airmass were 50 to 60 degrees below zero without the wind factored in.
Temperatures below freezing will creep as far south as Orlando Christmas Eve morning.

  1. The only thing that he said would happen, is that it would be windy. His prediction of 6” of snow for my area turned out to be just an 1-1/2”

  2. And, let me guess, main stream media outlets will push the propaganda narrative that this serious cold vortex is proof of global warming. Mark my words. Send money to Al and Gretha or we are all going to be treading salt water.

  3. *UPDATE:* We live 26 miles south of Buffalo NY (a-way out dar in da country…..lol).
All schools have closed, the thruways and expressways leading in/out of Buffalo have closed too. A travel BAN for the thruways has been issued. We dropped 10 degrees in 1 hour and it's still dropping.
"Hang-on for the ride" is what I told all my friends and relatives. – We have 9 cord of firewood in the garage so, if power's lost, we'll have the heat.

  4. Outdoor pets should be brought inside or provided some type of shelter. These temperatures are below what even outdoor animals can survive.

  5. Friday at 7:00 AM it will be 44 degrees in Buffalo but only 28 in New Orleans. The world upside down! Mind you that won't last very long.

  6. Thank you for the detailed information. Hitting the road to Montreal Friday. Praying for a safe travel. Watching from Queens, New York City.

  7. Just keep repeating…. We're living in an ever warming world…..we're living in an ever warming world…. you can click your heels together too if you like.

  8. Surprise Surprise, people voted for Biden and warming up of the planet, closing of coal mines as not needed anymore. Americans money going out of the country, illegals galore, we pay for. You voted for this, so enjoy!!
