1. Ponniyin Selvan is a Tamil historic novel authored by late Kalki Krishnamoorthy. It is a biographic account of Raja Rajan I, the great Chozha Emperor of Thamizh Naadu. He ruled over almost the entire south India in the 10th century CE with Thanjavoor as his capital.

   Ponni meaning the golden girl, is another Tamil name for the Kaaviri ( Cauvery) river that originates from the Kudagu hills ( Coorg in present day Karnataka), flows through Karnataka and Thamizh Naadu ( PudhuchEri included) and joins the Bay of Bengal near Nagapattinam in Tamil Naadu. Once in his adolescence, Raja Raja got caught in the swirling waters of the Ponni river and was struggling to reach the river bank. A legend says that mother Ponni, the river goddess, came to his rescue and helped him out of the surging waters of the river and since then, Arul Mozhi ( the real name of Raja Rajan) came to be known as Ponniyin Selvan ( the treasured son of the river Ponni).

   Quick backstory is that this movie is based on a super hit 50s historical fiction novel (Ponniyin Selvan) that portrays the period when there is a dynastic struggle and courtly intrigue in the Chola court.

   The early Cholas who were relegated to minor kingdoms during the latter centuries of the first millennium are vying to regain their former glory, and I the midst of it, there is plotting and backstabbing around who gets to sit on the throne; orchestrated by their enemies.

   One of the main characters is sending his most trusted confidante to pass on the message to his family about the impending plot, and that they should be careful.

   The rider (also one of the main characters of the novel, ) is on his journey and comes across the Ponni River , and the lives of the Chola people around it. The song portrays his journey across that land on this errand
