16. I did some research on this song. There are a few possible meanings for it, including the interpretation of Bowie's producer Nile Rogers who said that "China Girl" is another word for "Cocaine" in this song. Besides that, there's the interpretation that the song is a musical piece of irony and that Bowie is mocking the obsession of white men with Asian women who are "sweet, demure and nonthinking" (Hopkins); men who like to dominate and control. I think that this interpretation is more likely to be accurate. Considering that the subject of this song is Kuelan Nguyen who is not Chinese but Vietnamese, it appears like even more of a stereotype of ignorant Western people who tend to call people from all sorts of Asian countries "Chinese".
