Didn't in Shrek 2 he drank a potion or something that turned him into a horse? Wouldn't it turn him into a human like it did to Shrek when trying to rescue Fiona? Wouldn't that kinda debunk this theory, or would it throw a wrench into it?
I kind of always assumed he was a reference to the Pinocchio story, it didn't seem all that hidden imo, all the hints were pretty clear

What if its Nick Bottom from Midsummer Night's Dream? What if he chased down Titania and begged to be turned into a full donkey? Maybe he liked having the face of a donkey. Maybe he thought his life would be better. Maybe because she was fairly benevolent she granted his wish… Just in time for them to start rounding up fairytale characters?

Maybe but why did he turn into a full horse when Shrek and donkey both took the happily ever after potion
One additional point: if you remember at the start of the Shrek film, Donkey was reluctant to speak in front of the guard.The reluctancy could've been caused by abuse and trauma withstood by Donkey while on the island, as the donkeys there were always punished and sent back for talking.
But in my theory the timelines dont match. But remember its atheory a film theory aaaaand cut…..

Matpat, I love you man, but you overlooked something massive in this theory. The reason why there is a talking Donkey in this movie franchise that doesn't blatantly state its story of origin is because he is an original character implemented in from the Shrek book that was an inspiration for the movie. Much like Shrek and Fiona, he is just a character in the story with no previous ties to a fairy tail. Though obviously a genre parody, the original book was not focused on fairy tail characters in quite the same way as the movie. The decision to incorporate fairy tail characters into the film was done to parody Disney in a sort of middle finger way. The same reason lord Farquaad is modeled after Michael Eisner and meant to sound like, "lord fuckwad". And Farquaad isn't from any fairy tail or the original Shrek book. DreamWorks really just was not fond of Disney at the time.

Theory:
Donkey DID speak up and end the crime ring of pleasure island. With that shut down, it would of had a massive effect on how Pinnocios story played out. He never would of met the same people, got sent to pleasure island himself, or gotten swallowed by the whale, etc etc turned into a real boy.
Donkey is an "adult" in Shrek, so it's had to have been at least 20 years since he was transformed. And it's possible Pinoccio was never seemed worthy of being a real boy and just stayed a puppet since he never did anything super heroic–which only w puld have happened if he got sent to pleasure island.
I just want to say 1 thing. If that theory is true then why in shrek 2 or 3 did shrek get turned into a human but donkey get turned into a horse after drinking a potion? Shouldn't donkey be a human too?
